Ben became interested in the medium of watercolour in 1979 when he first exhibited in Auckland, New Zealand.
He enjoys painting plein air amidst our majestic mountains of the South Island. All his work is painted from real life whether landscape, portrait or still life.
Working fast, as light and other conditions change, does not allow for getting too caught up in the details. He finds that paintings made in this way is fresh and reflects the feeling of the subject he is portraying.
His work has been exhibited extensively in New Zealand. Over the years he has been able to paint in many countries including Taiwan, where he weathered out a cyclone at Sun Moon Lake!
When Prince Charles and Camilla last visited New Zealand he was invited to travel with them as the Tour Artist. Painting on tour proved an enjoyable challenge while travelling for a week throughout the country with the Royal entourage.
After more than 40 years of painting, he is still intrigued by this subtle and elusive medium as it envelops the page.
