About the Artist

Matthew William's artistic journey began in his youth, fascinated by timber and its potential. His early experiences involved crafting furniture and delving into architectural forms. His passion for design and construction flourished as he pursued studies and a career as a model maker.

Originally from England, Matthew's professional path led him through London, Dubai, and Auckland before settling in Christchurch. Each location influenced the evolution of his artwork, adapting to and embracing the unique regional materials available. He adeptly utilised local wood and stone to fashion contemporary shapes, imbuing his sculptures with a sense of place.

His artistic repertoire expanded as he mastered the techniques of working with bronze and steel. These mediums empowered Matthew to mould robust and enigmatic abstract forms that now characterise his artistic portfolio. Through his mastery of diverse materials, Matthew creates artworks that combine strength and abstraction, inviting viewers into a world of captivating shapes and textures.
